Diagnosis and management of Polymyalgia Rheumatica.

Polymyalgia Rheumatica.

Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory disorder affecting older patients. It is characterised by pain and stiffness around the shoulders and pelvis associated with blood test suggesting inflammation is present.

PMR can present both diagnostic  and management challenges as it can exist with osteoarthritis and soft tissue problems around the hips and shoulders, and requires accurate assessment. Dr Parker is very experienced in the assessment and diagnosis of PMR, which may require x-rays and MRI scans, in addition to blood tests.

Polymyalgia is initially managed with steroid therapies, which require expert monitoring to allow minimal dosing and avoidance of side effects. At Rheumatology Manchester, Dr Parker is very experienced in managing steroid therapies and assessing for their long-term safety.
